Making the Law Accessible to All

As law students, we’ve faced firsthand how inaccessible the law can be. Finding a specific paragraph or addressing a common legal problem is one thing, but understanding how the law applies to a unique situation, considering all relevant legal sources and interpretations, is quite another.

Navigating the Complex Legal Landscape

The rapid pace of new regulations complicates matters further, making it challenging even for legal experts. However, this issue is magnified for individuals and businesses that lack resources and legal knowledge.

As law professor and legal historian Jørn Øyrehagen Sunde put it:
“For the citizens, it is completely impossible to know which laws and regulations apply.”

The Cost of Legal Inefficiency

Consequently, those without significant resources endure poor legal protection and unsatisfactory user experiences. A Center for International Cooperation report highlights that 1.5 billion people have justice problems they cannot resolve.

The Hidden Costs of Legal Processes

The inefficiencies in today’s legal processes, due to complex regulations, translate into hidden, substantial costs for society. Individuals and businesses spend weeks or months entangled in legal issues, time that could otherwise be spent creating societal value.

The Impact on Individuals

Not only is this a problem on the societal level. The end user also directly experience expensive, slow legal assistance, compounded by improper incentives and confusing terminology, leading to high prices, wasted time, and increased stress and anxiety.

Bridging the Gap with AI

Recognising these challenges, we saw an opportunity to bridge the gap between the law and the public by developing AI systems tailored for the legal field. The idea took root at the turn of 2023, when we realised the transformative potential of new AI-models, both their capabilities and their limitations.

Integrating Technology for Real Impact

While large language models are a crucial component in making the law more accessible, they must be integrated into larger systems to be truly useful. With a realistic yet optimistic view of the current technological shift, we aim to address the concrete requirements for developing useful and trustworthy legal AI.

Our Progress and Future Vision

Since the summer of 2023, our team has been working on an initial version targeted at law students. This phase has provided us with substantial experience and secured some capital. Encouraged by industry insiders and backed by crucial partnerships, we are now advancing towards our mission: developing correct and scalable AI systems to serve laypeople and partners, ultimately making the law accessible, understandable, and usable for all.
