The problem
As law students, we’ve faced firsthand how inaccessible the law can be. Finding a specific paragraph or addressing a common legal problem is one thing, but understanding how the law applies to a unique situation, considering all relevant legal sources and interpretations, is quite another.
The rapid pace of new regulations complicates matters further, making it challenging even for legal experts. However, this issue is magnified for individuals and businesses that lack resources and legal knowledge.
As law professor and legal historian Jørn Øyrehagen Sunde put it:
Consequently, those without significant resources endure poor legal protection and unsatisfactory user experiences. A Center for International Cooperation report highlights that 1.5 billion people have justice problems they cannot resolve.
On the path towards solution
Recognising these challenges, we saw an opportunity to make law as efficient as software. The idea took root at the turn of 2023, when we realised the transformative potential of new AI models – both their capabilities and their limitations.
While large language models are a crucial component in making the law more accessible, they must be integrated into larger systems to be truly useful. With a realistic yet optimistic view of the current technological shift, we aim to address the concrete requirements for developing useful and trustworthy legal AI.
Since the summer of 2023, our team has been working on an initial version targeted at law students. This phase has provided us with substantial experience and secured some capital. Encouraged by industry insiders and backed by crucial partnerships, we are now advancing towards our mission: developing correct and scalable AI systems to serve laypeople and partners, ultimately making the law accessible, understandable, and usable for all.
